Kirkenduff Restores Historic Bothy to Promote Eco-Tourism

The derelict stone structure, once a simple shelter for drovers and shepherds, has been painstakingly restored by local volunteers and tradespeople, breathing new life into a piece of Kirkenduff’s heritage.

The project, spearheaded by the Kirkenduff Heritage Trust, began over two years ago with the vision of creating a low-impact accommodation option for walkers and cyclists exploring the scenic landscapes around the village. The bothy, nestled on the edge of the Kirkenduff Forest, had fallen into disrepair, becoming little more than a ruin. Thanks to a combination of community fundraising, a grant from the Scottish Rural Development Programme, and countless hours of volunteer labour, it now stands as a testament to sustainable restoration.

"It was a true labour of love," said Callum McGregor, project manager for the Kirkenduff Heritage Trust. "We aimed to keep as much of the original character as possible while incorporating modern eco-friendly features. It's a place where visitors can genuinely disconnect and appreciate the natural beauty of our area."

The restored bothy operates entirely off-grid, powered by solar panels and utilizing a rainwater harvesting system for its basic facilities. Inside, a composting toilet and a wood-burning stove ensure a minimal environmental footprint. The restoration used locally sourced materials wherever possible, and traditional building techniques were employed to maintain authenticity.

Bookings for the bothy are now open, and early interest suggests it will be a popular addition to Kirkenduff's tourism offerings. Visitors will find information on local walking and cycling routes, wildlife spotting opportunities, and details about Kirkenduff's other community initiatives, encouraging them to engage with the village in a meaningful way.

"This bothy isn't just about providing a place to stay," explained McGregor. "It's about telling the story of our land, promoting responsible tourism, and inviting people to experience the unique charm of Kirkenduff in a way that respects our environment and our history." The success of the restoration effort highlights the village's commitment to both preserving its past and building a sustainable future.
